Random Access Memory or RAM is the short term memory which is essential for every application the computer does. A single process may use 400 mb of memory, depending upon what it is actually doing.

Obviously, more complex applications dealing with more data would require more memory. For instance, a video editing application would need more memory than a simple application like a notepad.

Generally, an average computer requires one GB of memory and for using high- end application such as computer games, graphic design or video editing, more memory would be helpful. The slowing down of the computer may be due to one of the reasons like inadequate memory, running out of hard drive space or the presence of virus.

While opening multiple files and working with large videos, it becomes absolutely necessary to have two GB of RAM in the computer. Also, the choice of the operating system determines the need of the memory. Windows vista needs double the memory of windows XP.

Even for basic everyday use, 2 gb of memory is needed and for running extensive programs like Photoshop or any other type of video program or running multiple programs simultaneously, then definitely, three or four gb of RAM is essential.

While upgrading a computer, it should be ensured whether the system is compatible with the new memory sticks and 2 GB memory sticks can be purchased for as low as forty five dollars, which is definitely worth the money spent.
