1 GB Computer Memory

Depending upon the type of data, the computer stores the data in different types of memory which can be either long term or short term. Long term memory is inside the computer in the form of Read Only Memory and as the name suggests; the data can only be read but cannot be deleted or edited.

Read Only Memory is used for storing vital System files like that are never altered. In contrast, short term memory of a computer means the computer can store data which are processed and results produced and are almost similar to the rough space of a computer. This short term memory is called random access memory.

Now, every program uses command and hence the more the ram, the better will be the efficiency of the computer. The capacity of Ram is measured in terms of megabytes and a typical computer consists of 64 megabytes or 128 MB. The Ram of the computer can be upgraded to 256 mb, 512 mb or 1 gb, provided, the system supports it.

Generally 1 GB ram is quite sufficient for those who use windows XP with programs like images and burning of CDs with Nero express program. For utilizing the computer with huge graphic files and digital files, a computer with 2 GB would be essential.

When the memory is insufficient, it will be evident when the speed of the computer slows down. Normally, computers will be purchased with sufficient RAM but after some years, new programs crop up and latest operating systems installed which warrant up gradation of memory for the computer. So, it becomes crucial to either upgrade the existing RAM or limit with some basic function, using rudimentary operating systems.
